About Cologne

Lying on the banks of the River Rhine, Cologne is one of the oldest Cities in Germany. With more than 3million inhabitants Cologne is one of Europe’s major metropolitan areas and the fourth largest city in Germany.  It is made up of nine urban districts and a total of 85 quarters, known as "Veedel" in Cologne dialect

A major cultural region of the Rhineland, Cologne is noted for its vibrant arts scene. It hosts a range of museums and galleries to take up your time. In fact Cologne is one of the country's most historic cities, and many of the best sights are to be found close to its breathtaking Kölner Dom (cathedral), close to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof)

Cologne is considered the most flood prone European city. Rising waters from the Rhine threaten Cologne. After a major flood in 1993 the city agency introduced a more effective flood control system.

Your might recognize Cologne as a fragrance  Eau de Cologne . At the beginning of the 18th century an expatriate, Johann Maria Farina created a new fragrance and named it after his hometown Cologne, Eau de Cologne (Water of Cologne). In the course of the 18th century the fragrance became increasingly popular. The name is still recognizable as a top quality traditional fragrance
